Fact Sheet: Inequity in the Air

Overview

This factsheet was created in conjunction with the Asian Pacific Environmental Network and Communities for a Better Environment to highlight key findings from our recent report, "Inequity in the Air," an analysis of emitting facilities and emissions in the Bay Area. Key findings include:

  • Neighborhoods, or “block groups,” with a higher proportion of people of color tend to be located near more facilities, but also near facilities that pollute more.
  • Low-income households experience much larger amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and harmful co-pollutants.
  • Both neighborhoods with residents who have lower levels of educational attainment and higher levels of linguistic isolation experience higher levels of GHG, PM2.5, PM10, NOx, and SOx emissions from nearby facilities.

Affirming Belonging: Expanding State and Local AFFH Efforts

Overview

Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) is a mandate under the Fair Housing Act that requires governments to take proactive steps to dismantle barriers to housing choice and address patterns of segregation and discrimination. With federal enforcement weakening and racial disparities in housing growing, state and local governments must play a central role in ensuring fair, inclusive housing for all.

This policy brief offers recommendations, best practices, and examples of existing state and local AFFH policies to help jurisdictions develop and adopt strong, community-centered AFFH strategies.
